Proposed Palmer Boulevard
Speed Limit Increase

On March 10, 2008, the Traffic Advisory Council held a hearing to consider raising the speed along Palmer Boulevard from I-75 to Iona Road.

While BRNC was neutral about increasing the speed limit between I-75 and Debrecen Road, we were firmly opposed to increasing the speed limit east of Debrecen Rd. That segment has narrow travel lanes, deep ruts, no shoulders and deep ditches close to the roadway - a dangerous combination.

One speaker spoke in support of the increase and four speakers spoke in opposition. A Sarasota Audubon Society representative spoke in opposition to raising the speed limit through the Celery Fields near I-75.Three members of BRNC made a presentation to the Traffic Advisory Council outlining our opposition.

The Traffic Advisory Council voted unanimously against the proposal.

Proctor & Clark Intersection

At the request of a member community, BRNC met with county staff to discuss the need for resurfacing the intersection at Proctor and Clark roads. The project was included in the 2007 project list and is now complete.

Bee Ridge/Bee Ridge Publix

The residents represented by the Bee Ridge Neighborhoods Committee were deeply divided on the Bee Ridge/Bee Ridge Extension Neighborhood Commercial Center. Accordingly, BRNC took no position on the Comprehensive Plan amendment or the Rezone Petition.

Rothenbach Park

Concept plans for Rothenbach Park showed an amphitheater, which raised noise and traffic concerns in our communities.

BRNC met with county staff and reviewed the construction plans and permits to determine no amphitheater appears on the approved documents.

The Sarasota County Government FY 2008 thru FY 2012 Proposed Capital Improvement Program shows funding of $1,832,000 for fiscal year 2008 and a January 2008 through September 2009 construction schedule (pg. 6-35).

FPL Solar Array

BRNC met with county staff and FPL at Rothenbach Park to discuss our concerns about the possibility of relocating the solar array.

After much consideration, the location was not changed.

FPL Bobwhite-Manatee

FPL Area Manager Mel Klein presented to BRNC an overview of the proposed Bobwhite Substation to be located on the north side of Fruitville Rd. near Dog Kennel Rd. (at the existing transmission lines) on property currently under contract, which is part of a planned 230-Kv transmission line project to add strength and redundancy to the network by adding a circuit to the Manatee Energy Center in Parrish.

Our member communities are outside of the study area and will not be impacted by the substation or transmission line corridor. BRNC took no position on the project.
